The 3M™ Clinical Data Repository (3M CDR) is a central database of individual, electronic, lifetime patient records that users can access, analyze, and add to, right at the point of care. While data in the 3M CDR comes primarily from interfaced legacy information systems, clinicians can also document findings directly into the 3M CDR. Once stored in the 3M CDR, data can immediately become available to authorized users throughout the healthcare continuum: acute care facilities, clinics, surgery centers, wellness and home health care centers, and doctors’ offices.

Although the 3M CDR collects and stores patient demographic, encounter, and clinical data from information systems across healthcare settings and over time, it is more than a “data warehouse.” In summary, the 3M CDR provides:

  • Data accessibility—instead of searching for paper charts or medical records from other facilities, clinicians and other authorized users easily access patient data stored in the 3M CDR via customized applications and remotely through clinician portals
  • Up-to-date patient data—users see the latest data because information is continuously transmitted over standard interfaces from existing legacy systems
  • Data “depth and breadth”—the 3M CDR stores an extensive range of complex data gathered from across an integrated delivery network and supports the addition of new data fields as needed
  • Patient-centered record structure—the 3M CDR tracks all patient encounters and episodes—no matter where or when they occurred—so clinicians throughout the enterprise can share treatment information and focus on preventive care
  • Data security—access to the patient data in the 3M CDR is controlled at the database, transaction, and application levels

Enhanced Work Flow
The design of the 3M CDR lets users easily access and work with data organized around the patient or enterprise member, rather than by care facility or department. For example, a third-party, enterprise-wide scheduling system can be linked to the 3M CDR to supply patient scheduling information. Clinicians can then use a webenabled application to see their current day’s patient appointment list. The clinician can select a patient from the list, retrieve that patient’s entire data record from the 3M CDR, and then review, edit, and add to the record as part of the actual care process.

Open System Architecture
The 3M CDR’s open system architecture lets an enterprise preserve its investment in legacy information systems, because the 3M CDR gathers data through continuous transmissions from existing laboratory, pharmacy, ADT, transcription, and scheduling systems, all of which remain intact and operational. The 3M CDR receives data over standard HL7 interfaces, and, because of its SQL structure, allows clinicians, enterprise planners, researchers, administrators, and other users to examine patient data:

  • Concurrently within protocols and treatment guidelines
  • Retrospectively for quality studies, trend analysis, and other reports
